There has been a plethora of information written and discussed
about the importance of having engaged employees. The theory is that more
engaged employees yield a more committed, innovative, solution oriented, and
customer friendly workforce. The problem is that there is generally not a
shorthand way to evaluate engagement.

With the end of the fiscal year and the conclusion of evaluations for the previous year, my attention frequently turns to future strategic goals and opportunities. I always make sure to include employee training in the scan for improved opportunities. Training is critical to retaining a productivity edge, engagement, and focus. However, with tighter discretionary budgets, it is imperative that the training be valuable, timely, and specific to the issues in the workplace. The principles of ROI apply to training just as it does to other parts of the value chain.
