We are just getting past the dog days of summer and it is time to turn the corner on strategic planning and development. Strangely, that always seems to correspond with the start of football season-the American pastime! Something about the anticipation of the season and the movement toward a new fiscal year gets those animal spirits moving. It is always a good time to question the assumptions of how and why you are doing things. Much of the rationale for previous decisions may no longer be relevant. Typically, the failure to question assumptions and to improve in specific areas is where organizations begin to yield to mediocrity. In the referenced article the commentator examines this issue by advocating a comprehensive view of your strategy, environment, teams, and operations, through questions. Some of these include: what’s the new opportunity that we are not seeing? How might we learn from other organizations, both competitors and non competitors? What’s the craziest idea that just might work? What’s possible now that was not possible last year/month? Once the questions have been developed and tailored to your situation, you should begin to evaluate them and analyze them for their potential. “Great questions help us generate productive conversations and conversations are our currency for getting things done.” A great point and perhaps why we are having fewer productive conversations and not getting the right things. I know that I am missing essential conversations and the chance to energize solutions. There is always a focus on the answers, but the real key starts with the questions. Ask better questions and get on the path to better answers. That is the right way to kick off the season. |
